Assam-type houses are found in the Northeast Indian state of Assam and nearby areas. They are generally single-story houses, but sometimes double-story varieties can be found. The houses are built to be earthquake proof. The houses are made from different materials, ranging from wood and bamboo to steel and concrete.
Before the arrival of the British in India, royal families in Assam lived in expensive, elaborately constructed houses, while the locals survived in huts made from mud-plastered bamboo walls and thatched roofs. The Assam type houses are a result of the arrival of the British in India. They assessed the environment and designed and constructed the houses that are now known as Assam-type houses.
